• Client: University Health Network, Patient Education Program and UHN Asian Community Health Fund
  • Role: Designer, illustrator
  • Challenge: The University Health Network runs an annual radiothon in collaboration with Fairchild Radio to raise funds for its Chinese Community Health Fund. The funds can be used for health education resources and programming targeting Chinese communities. As patients of Chinese origin are one of the top ethnic patient groups treated at University Health Network, much of the money raised comes from this community. The fund holders needed a way to thank the community for their support.
  • Solution: A bilingual calendar was an ideal way to show thanks while also promoting health services that may be useful to the Chinese community. Content was developed and written by staff of Chinese origin, with consideration for what would be relevant and appealing to the community. A health-related word was chosen for each month and written by a calligrapher who was a former patient of the hospital. Illustrations were created to match the calligraphy, which was then embedded into the image. The layout and colours were chosen to match the calm, painterly style of the images. 5000 calendars were printed and all copies were picked up by patients in advance of the new year.
