Challenge: The Patient Education Program produces a large volume of educational materials, while also consulting with external teams to advise on educational initiatives. Staff without a design background often ask about how to improve the quality of their materials for patients, and some may not realize the impact small changes can have on the user’s experience.
Solution: In order to promote readability, usability, and accessibility across the organization, a set of design guidelines were created. They are written in a way to be easily understood by anyone even if they do not have a design background. Design tips are grouped by categories, such as layout, text, colour and images, and include research justification around why specific decisions improve the design. The guidelines are available to all staff on an Intranet site as well as shared with relevant users as applicable.
